An Empty West University Formal Living Room Gets a Makeover

WEST UNIVERSITY FORMAL LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER - BEFORE

The layout of this beautiful West University home is traditional - immediately off of the entry, there is a formal dining room to the left, and the formal living room to the right.  The formal living room is incredibly open from the foyer, so the design of the space impacts the welcoming feel of the home.

This family wanted a space that would set the tone for the rest of the home, and be a beautiful room for the adults to enjoy when hosting guests.  There was only 1 piece that had to stay - their beautiful piano.  The rest of the room was a completely blank canvas!  Check out these photos of the formal living room before…

WEST UNIVERSITY FORMAL LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER - DESIGN PLAN

In many cases, a “formal living room” can seem too uptight and stuffy, but these clients wanted to embrace the idea of an elegant space that would feel very special.  They were open to the idea of an eclectic mix of furnishings -  both traditional and slightly modern.

Upon determining the best furniture arrangement for the living room, I started thinking about a cool base color palette that would be interesting to mix with warmer brass tones.  I loved that these clients were open to interesting color combos - so I decided to go with neutral upholstery fabrics, but then a dramatic cobalt blue for drapery fabric and accents.  Here’s a few images showing the design process…

WEST UNIVERSITY FORMAL LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER - AFTER

The grey, gold, and cobalt space turned out beautifully and really gives a dramatic, elegant surprise when you enter the house.  The upholstery fabrics and rug are still incredible kid and pet friendly, but they don’t sacrifice in the style department one bit.  I think my favorite element in the room is the WOW factor of the drapery - the color is stunning and bold!  Take a look at how this formal living room turned out:
