Survival Guide to Spring Cleaning

Punxsutawney Phil may have predicted 6 more weeks of winter, but we all know “March comes in like a lion, and out like a lamb.”  That joyous moment when you can finally open the windows and let the warm breeze in will be here before we know it!  And you know what that means… its time for spring cleaning!

While some might thoroughly enjoy welcoming the warmer seasons ahead with a good dusting.  As an Interior Designer, spring decluttering and organizing are my favorite tasks.  The changing season is the perfect occasion to freshen up your home! Here are some of my favorite products to help refresh and organize your home!

CALMING THE KITCHEN CHAOS

From pantry items, to pots and pans, bakeware, and utensils.  Kitchens and pantries can feel like a blackhole when it comes to organization. Adding to the chaos, are the endless options of kitchen organization products, and DIY solutions.  Storage bins and baskets are a practical –and maybe even underrated– solution for organizing items you need often but don't want on display. Whether you’re mixing, or matching materials and colors, storage baskets can add a tidy look to your shelves and counters.

DECLUTTERING DILEMMAS

Having a home that is both organized and functional for the everyday sounds crazy, but achievable! The first step to attaining an organized space, is decluttering.  Before shifting into declutter mode of keep, toss or donate. Take a pause and think about your lifestyle –Your living room for instance! A shared household space, whose hospitable atmosphere welcomes all kinds, including unwanted chaos and clutter.  What are your needs for this specific space? What items do you need to facilitate the activities you partake in often, in this space?  Do any of these items contribute to the clutter and chaos? Your answers will solve your decluttering dilemmas. All necessities can be stored and organized appropriately. All other items should be relocated and stored elsewhere!

Organization Tip: Adding a tray to your coffee table or console table is a useful item to corral in remotes, coasters, smaller items! To Shop The looks, click here!

DESIGN TIP: HOW TO AVOID THE OVERWHELM

One room at a time. Cleaning and organizing your entire house, can turn into a daunting task. To avoid the overwhelm, focus on one room at a time. Start in the basement, and work your way up to the rest of your house. Don’t move onto a new room until you feel you’ve successfully completed that one. Cleaning a whole house will seem a lot less scary this way!

Do a little at a time. Rome wasn’t built in a day (or in one weekend). You don’t need to give yourself one weekend to tackle your entire house. Avoid the stress of meeting a deadline by setting small goals to clean out one room, or section of a room (aka your closet) at a time.
